Philanthropy Starts Young

Holly Harris
Most children spend their spare time chatting with friends, watching their favourite movies or playing video games.  But not nine-year-old Holly Harris; she’s well on her way to become one of Toronto’s youngest philanthropists.

On Saturday, May 13th, Holly, along with her sister Lindsay, mother Heather and neighbourhood friends hosted Holly’s Bake Sale, in support of cancer research at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

The event raised $125 and was greatly supported by neighbours and friends who couldn’t get enough of the homemade cookies, cakes and cupcakes on sale. Holly took three weeks to plan the event and distributed flyers throughout her neighbourhood.

Commenting on the sale's success Holly says, “It feels pretty good.  I know lots of people die everyday from cancer and I did something good.  Some people in my family have died from cancer.”

On the morning of the sale a relative of the family passed away after an extended battle with cancer and the Harris family decided it would be most appropriate to honour the memory of their loved one by donating the proceeds of the sale to Sunnybrook Foundation.

“I’m inspired by things I did at school, like the Terry Fox Run.  I’m hoping to make the sale an annual event and my friends will help,” says Holly.
