Truly Making A Difference

Tina Urman
Several years ago, Tina Urman joined together with a close group of friends with the hope of raising funds towards the fight against breast cancer. Their expectations, although high, have been far surpassed. They learned that you truly can make a difference.

Under the heading of Health and Fitness Events, the group successfully hosted a woman’s weekend for 10 years, at Camp Manitou in Parry Sound which then branched into The Challenge, a community based event that involved various fitness clubs across the GTA. Participants were challenged to raise money through sponsorship towards a two hour cycle class.   Collectively their efforts have raised over $1,500,000 with the majority of the money having been donated to Primary Prevention.

Thrilled with past results, prior to last year’s Challenge, Cycle by Day…Dance by Night, the group decided to find a tangible way for people to feel better connected to the outcome of their donations.  The Challenge decided to donate all money raised towards the purchase of a digital mammography machine: equipment greatly needed by Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre.   Cycle by Day...Dance by Night proved to be another overwhelming success, raising $325,000.

Dr. Moody, Radiologist in Chief, wrote with heartfelt thanks after hearing the news,  “I wanted to follow up on the wonderful news following your efforts this weekend. You are to be thanked not only by Sunnybrook but by all of the women who will undoubtedly benefit from your efforts. Your fund raising efforts have really galvanized people around the digital mammography project and has generated a momentum that should allow the completion of the project far sooner than anyone could have hoped for.”

Tina’s experience has proven that anything is possible and that by believing that you can make a difference is what makes the difference.  Dreams do come true.
