Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care It matters most when your car spins out of control Sunnybrook is home to one of the highest acuity Emergency Departments in Canada, and the country’s first and largest Trauma Centre. Established in 1976, the Trauma Centre is, in patient volume, Canada’s busiest adult Trauma Centre. Last year, the John and Liz Tory Trauma Centre assessed and resuscitated more than 1,200 trauma patients: Approximately 50 per cent of these patients came directly from the scene via land and air ambulance, and half were received from more than 80 referring hospitals from as far as Timmins, Thunder Bay, and Kingston. As the provincial base for the Land and Air Ambulance Program, the Tory Trauma Centre receives 92 per cent of air ambulance transfers, making it the first source for trauma care in the Greater Toronto Area, and Ontario.
As well, we are recognized for our work in disaster preparedness; Sunnybrook is looked upon as the local and provincial lead in managing the healthcare response related to everything from disease outbreaks to chemical spills to subway crashes. Built to accommodate 20,000 patients annually, our Emergency Department currently sees 45,000 patients every year. In 2009, we will double the existing trauma and critical care areas so that we can continue to provide our patients with the best of emergency care, when it matters most.
