Schulich Heart Centre

It Matters Most When You Know In Your Heart Something’s Wrong

Heart disease is the #1 killer of Canadians. Over 20 per cent of the population aged 45 to 59 have already been diagnosed with heart disease, stroke or high blood pressure. As this group enters its 60’s – the age at which heart disease rates begin to climb markedly – the number of people experiencing some form of cardiovascular disease increases dramatically.

Sunnybrook’s Schulich Heart Centre is one of the largest cardiac care centers in Ontario with over 6,500 surgical, catheterization, angioplasty and pacemaker cases annually. Our highly skilled multi-disciplinary team delivers a full spectrum of in-hospital and ambulatory cardiovascular care, significantly improving the quality of life for patients with heart conditions in Canada.

The Schulich Heart Centre has achieved significant milestones:

  • Performing many Canadian firsts, such as the modified maze procedure, correcting certain arrhythmias
  • Offering patients some of the world’s most innovative, safest and least invasive techniques;
  • Finding strategies to meet the needs of the aging, complex cardiovascular patient

Our Coronary Care Unit was considered state-of-the-art when it was built in the 1960’s. Nearly forty years later, we need to expand and renovate our existing cardiac care facilities, create a new Cardiac Acute Care Unit and support areas to meet rising demands, and provide the innovative treatment for which Sunnybrook is known.
